Abstract

The subject of this thesis is the dissipativity-based analysis of stochastic optimal control problems and stochastic model predictive control (MPC), with a particular focus on stability, performance, and long-horizon behavior under uncertainty. Decision-making under uncertainty is a fundamental challenge in modern engineering, economics, and applied mathematics. Many real-world systems are inherently affected by stochastic disturbances, incomplete information, and random environmental dynamics, which makes it necessary to develop control methodologies that explicitly account for uncertainty in both system evolution and performance criteria. Stochastic optimal control provides a natural framework for this purpose and forms the basis for a wide range of theoretical and applied developments, including stochastic model predictive control as a key methodology for closed-loop operation of stochastic systems. In this work, a comprehensive dissipativity-based framework for stochastic optimal control is developed. The main idea is to use dissipativity as a structural tool for analyzing long-horizon properties of stochastic systems and for characterizing their stationary behavior. In contrast to existing approaches, which are mainly based on expectations or distributional quantities, the proposed framework allows for a more refined analysis that also captures structural properties of the underlying stochastic processes. Based on this framework, stochastic notions of dissipativity and turnpike properties are introduced and systematically studied. It is shown that stationary stochastic processes play a central role as asymptotic objects for stochastic optimal control problems and can be characterized via associated stationary optimization problems. Furthermore, hierarchical relations between different notions of dissipativity and turnpike behavior are established. The theoretical results are then used to derive closed-loop stability and performance guarantees for stochastic economic MPC. In particular, dissipativity is employed as a tool to analyze the asymptotic behavior of the closed-loop system. This leads to convergence results in several stochastic senses, including convergence results in distribution and on the level of random variables, as well as tight performance estimates. Finally, the framework is extended to risk-averse stochastic MPC formulations. Both risk-averse objective functions and risk-averse constraint formulations are considered, leading to a unified treatment of expectation-based and risk-averse stochastic MPC within the same dissipativity-based framework.
