Abstract

In traditional approaches business processes are executed on top of IT-based Workflow-Management Systems (WfMSs). However, when dealing with human-driven workflows, conventional WfMSs may turn out to be too restrictive. Especially, the only way to handle exceptions is to bypass the system. If users are forced to bypass WfMSs frequently, the system is more an obstacle than an asset. In order to diminish the dependency from IT-based process management systems, we propose a cheap and fast installable alternative way of supporting workflow execution that is especially suitable for human-driven processes. We introduce the so-called Process Checklist representation where processes are described as a paper-based step-by-step instruction handbook. Process Checklists can either be set up directly for the desired process or be derived from an already existing process model. A transformation from BPMN models to Process Checklists is given as well as implementation instructions with an underlying meta-model. Furthermore, evaluations in the academic as well as in the business domain have been performed to evaluate the approach.
