Abstract
Magnetosomes do not only serve magnetotactic bacteria as geomagnetic field sensors but also represent a novel class of magnetic iron oxide nanoparticles with unprecedented material properties. The recent development of genetic engineering techniques for their multifunctionalization now has turned magnetosomes into a versatile ‘click-able’ platform for the straightforward generation of magnetic nanoparticles tailored for specific catalytic and theranostic applications.
