Abstract

For geomagnetic navigation, magnetotactic bacteria (MTB) form magnetosomes. Biogenesis of these unique magnetic organelles is a stepwise process controlled by more than 30 magnetosome-associated proteins. Recent findings suggest that magnetosome assembly involves simple protein translocation systems distantly related to the plastidial protein translocase core subunit Tic20.
