Abstract

In the age of globalisation, mobility has become an unstoppable phenomenon. Everything is in motion and/or is shaped by motion: capital, goods, information, ideologies, people, etc. Mobility has thus emerged as the new prism through which contemporary societies are analysed. As a consequence of this mobility turn, essentialist paradigms are increasingly challenged and concepts such as movement, flow and fluidity are becoming more and more prevalent. New paradigms such as transnationality and transculturality are also gaining ground and contributing to the gradual erosion of monolithic notions of categories such as space and identity. They appear much less as static, closed and unique instances, and much more as ongoing processes, or as constantly renewed constructions. The migrant, a central figure in this dynamic, is no longer seen as a simple emigrant or immigrant, but as a real circulating subject that comes today and stays tomorrow, that moves or commutes. Through his/her movement, he/she not only challenges the spatial configuration of migration landscapes, but also negotiates a new subjectivity and new identities. It is assumed that through their narrative aesthetics and the imaginary worlds they create, films can make a fruitful contribution to the deconstruction of essentialist notions of space and identity concepts and to the imagination of new approaches across national and cultural borders. The focus of the work is thus on film as a space for staging, narrating and imagining the migration experiences of African migrants. Special attention is paid to the narratives of socio-spatial dynamics in the construction of the migration project, the appropriation and negotiation of migration spaces by migrant figures, and the construction processes of migrant identities in transnational spaces. Thus, against the background of postmodern and postcolonial approaches to migration, as well as film theory and film philosophy, the question of how the representations of African migration to Europe are constructed narratively in contemporary films are investigated in the present contribution. Furthermore, the work is based on the question of how these constructions evoke new imaginations of monolithic concepts such as space, cultural identity and belonging.

Im Zeitalter der Globalisierung ist die Mobilität zu einem unaufhaltsamen Phänomen geworden. Alles ist in Bewegung und/oder wird durch Bewegung geprägt: Kapital, Waren, Informationen, Ideologien, Menschen usw. Mobilität hat sich dadurch als das neue Prisma herauskristallisiert, durch das die zeitgenössischen Gesellschaften analysiert werden. Als Folge dieser Mobilitätswende werden essentialistische Paradigmen zunehmend in Frage gestellt, und Konzepte wie Bewegung, Fluss und Fluidität setzen sich immer mehr durch. Neue Paradigmen wie Transnationalität und Transkulturalität gewinnen ebenfalls an Terrain und tragen zur allmählichen Erosion monolithischer Auffassungen von Kategorien wie Raum und Identität bei. Sie erscheinen viel weniger als statische, geschlossene und einzigartige Instanzen und viel mehr als laufende Prozesse bzw. als ständig erneuerte Konstruktionen. MigrantInnen, zentrale Figuren in dieser Dynamik, werden nicht mehr als einfache EmigrantInnen oder ImmigrantInnen betrachtet, sondern als reale zirkulierende Subjekte, die heute kommen und morgen bleiben, die umziehen oder pendeln. Durch ihre Bewegung fordern sie nicht nur die räumliche Konfiguration von Migrationslandschaften heraus, sondern handeln sich auch neue Subjektivität und Identitäten aus. Es wird angenommen, dass Filme durch ihre narrative Ästhetik und die von ihnen geschaffenen imaginären Welten einen fruchtbaren Beitrag zur Dekonstruktion von essentialistischen Vorstellungen von Raum- und Identitätskonzepten und zur Imagination neuer Ansätze über nationale und kulturelle Grenzen hinweg leisten können. Im Mittelpunkt der Arbeit steht also der Film als ein Raum für die Inszenierung und Narrativisierung der Migrationserfahrungen afrikanischer Migranten. Besondere Aufmerksamkeit gilt den Narrativen sozialräumlicher Dynamiken bei der Konstruktion des Migrationsprojekts, der Aneignung und Verhandlung von Migrationsräumen durch Migrantenfiguren sowie der Konstruktionsprozesse von Migrantenidentitäten in transnationalen Räumen. Vor dem Hintergrund postmoderner und postkolonialer Migrationsansätze sowie filmtheoretischer und filmphilosophischer Überlegungen wird in dieser Arbeit der Frage nachgegangen, wie die Darstellungen der afrikanischen Migration nach Europa in zeitgenössischen Filmen narrativ konstruiert werden. Darüber hinaus stellt sich die Frage, wie diese Konstruktionen neue Imaginationen von monolithischen Konzepten wie Raum, kulturelle Identität und Zugehörigkeit hervorrufen.
