Applications in biomedicine and ferrofluids, for instance, require long-term colloidally stable, concentrated aqueous dispersions of magnetic, biocompatible nanoparticles. Iron oxide and related spinel ferrite nanoparticles stabilized with organic molecules allow fine-tuning of magnetic properties via cation substitution and water-dispersibility.
