Abstract

The institution of chieftaincy actively shapes how Ghanaian municipalities function on a daily basis. Chiefs largely decide who is elected to the municipal councils and who holds the highest office. By acquiescing to this practice, the state is mindful that its own legitimacy is contingent on the affirmation of neo-traditional authority.
