Abstract

Abstract in weiterer Sprache

This thesis focuses on the mesostructuring of transition metal oxides by the use isopolyoxometalate precursors in the presence of one di-mensional block copolymer templates. Additionally, the resulting tran-sition metal oxide structures were converted to carbides and nitrides and were tested as catalysts. During the first step of mesostructuring and hybrid formation, macro-phase separation between the inorganic polyoxometallate precursor and the organic diblock copolymer template had to be avoided. This was achieved by the concept of charged, rigid, one-dimensional block copolymer templates, developed at the departement AC1. Diblock co-polymers enable the synthesis of one-dimensional cylinder micelles, which are invariant against micellar dynamics due to crosslinking of the core block. Furthermore, the polycationic shell of the cylinder mi-celles can be loaded with polyoxometalate anions, due to strong cou-lomb interactions. Therefrom, stable hybrid materials resulted. In this thesis the concept of formation of inorganic-organic hybrid ma-terials by the use of one-dimensional diblock copolymer cylinder tem-plates was transfered to isopolyoxometalates. These transition metal-oxygen clusters enable the synthesis of pure transition metal oxide structures with no hetero atoms. Due to the insolubility of isopolyoxometalates in organic solvents, a hybrid synthesis in aqueous media was developed and optimized. Un-fortunately, the inner surface of these one-dimensional hybrid materi-als was not accessible because of coverage with the organic template. Therefore, removal of the polymer template was one focus of this the-sis. In general, the choice of the template removal procedure is mainly influenced by the stability of the template/precursor system. To avoid a collapse of the mesostructure, condensation of the inorganic precursor has to be finished until the template is removed. Additionally, the tem-plate has to be removed, until sintering and collapsing of the inorganic scaffold sets in. For metatungstate anions, a commercial isopolyoxotungstate, the mesostructuring of isopolyoxometalates by polycationic polybutadi-ene-block-poly(2-vinylpyridin) (PB-b-P2VP) cylinder micelles in aqueous media could be demonstrated. Therein, adjusting of the pH-value lead to protonation of the P2VP-shell and a stabilization of the isopolyoxometalate. The resulting one-dimensional hybrid materials had a non-woven structure with a hierarchical porosity. Complete tem-plate removal was achieved by a simple calcination in air, which lead to the formation of a hierarchically porous non-woven structure of tungsten oxide nanotubes. Due to the confined space in the walls of the tubes, the orthorhombic high-temperature phase of WO3 was formed. Additionally, the non-woven network of hierar-chically porous tungsten oxide nanotubes was tested in the photocata-lytic decomposition of a dye solution. In previous studies, the accessibility of the inner surface of mesostruc-tured materials was limited by amorphous carbon, which was formed from the polymer template during the calcination procedure. For re-moval of this carbon, diblock copolymer cylinder micelles were syn-thesized, which contain a core-block with a far lower decomposition temperature than the corona-block. The use of this labile core-block within a molybdate-based hybrid material allowed the seperate removal of the core-block by thermal depolymerization at low temperatures. In a second calcination step, the remaining corona-block was used for carbide formation. The resulting non-woven network of molybdenum oxycarbide nanotubes showed accessiblity of the inner surface through constricted pores. The molybdenum oxycarbide material showed cata-lytic activity in the decompositon of ammonia. Up to now, a simple calcination of one dimensional hybrid materials of isopolyoxomolybdates in air was not possible due to the high vapour pressure of MoVI+ even at low temperature. The high vapour pressure of MoVI+ leads to gas phase sintering and to a loss of the mesostruc-ture. Avoidance of this sintering was achieved by template removal in two steps. In the first step, the hybrid material with the polymeric tem-plate was transformed to the corresponding carbide in argon atmos-phere. In a second calcination in CO2 atmosphere, the molybdenum carbide was oxidized to MoO2, which has a much lower vapour pres-sure than MoO3. Simultaneously, the remaining carbon was oxidatively removed from the mesostructure. Subsequent nitridation of the non-woven network of MoO2 lead to nanowires of the hexagonal MoN-phase, which were tested in the catalytic decompositon of ammonia. Additionally, the MoO2 nanowires were oxidized to MoO3 without va-pour-phase sintering, which demonstrated the possibility of mesostruc-turing of MoO3.
