Abstract

Abstract in weiterer Sprache

The influence of molecular properties, such as mass and moment of inertia, on diffusion and thermal diffusion of binary liquids of low molecular weight has been studied experimentally. The experimental technique used is based on transient holographic gratings. The Soret, thermal diffusion and the mutual mass diffusion coefficient of mixtures containing acetone, benzene, benzene-d1, benzene-d3, benzene-d5, benzene-d6, benzene-13C6, cyclohexane, cyclohexane-d12, n-hexane, isobutylbenzene, toluene, 1,2,3,4-tetrahydronaphthaline, dodecane and 1,6-dibromohexane have been measured at a temperature of 25°C. In addition temperature dependent measurements in a temperature range from 15°C to 35°C have been performed for the mixtures of the various benzenes and 1,6-dibromohexane in cyclohexane and cyclohexane-d12 in order to investigate the temperature dependence of the Soret coefficient and its isotope effect. The isotope effect of the Soret coefficient due to perdeuteration of the cyclohexane is independent of concentration for all investigated mixtures and with exception of the polar acetone almost of the same magnitude. The temperature dependence is linear for the examined mixtures in the investigated temperature range and varies with concentration. The isotope effect of the Soret coefficient due to perdeuteration of the cyclohexane is temperature independent. For the mixture benzene/cyclohexane a concentration is found where the Soret coefficient has a finite value and is independent of temperature. It is possible to split the Soret coefficient into two additive contributions. The first contribution is the concentration and temperature dependent chemical contribution. It factorizes into a concentration dependent function with a temperature invariant shape augmented with a temperature dependent amplitude factor. The vanishing of the concentration dependent function and thus of the chemical contribution leads to the observed temperature independent fixed point, which is described in this work for the first time. The second contribution is the isotope contribution which is independent of concentration and temperature. It consists of two summands, one of them being dependent on the masses and the other on the moments of inertia of the components of the mixture. However, not only the own data are described very well over the entire concentration and temperature range by this ansatz, but also data taken from literature. The concentration independent amplitude factor is almost the same for all investigated mixtures and in most cases a temperature independent fixed point exists. As a consequence not the locus of a sign change of the Soret coefficient, which is temperature dependent, but rather the temperature independent fixed point has a special meaning. Furthermore a simple additive mixing rule is analyzed that depends only on properties of the pure components. According to that mixing rule for equimolar nearly ideal mixtures the components can be placed in a row of increasing thermophobic behavior. A surprisingly good agreement between the predicted and the measured values has been found. On the other side, it is shown that the concept of this model is not suited for the prediction of the concentration dependence of the Soret coefficient. The mass diffusion coefficient is only marginally changed due to a perdeuteration of cyclohexane. Over the entire concentration range the ratio between the mass diffusion coefficients of the two mixtures is constant. This small difference of a few percent is explained by kinetic theory, which, however, does not provide the absolute value of the mass diffusion coefficient of the mixtures. On the other hand, although the molar volumes of the components are of comparable magnitude, the Stokes-Einstein equation describes the limiting tracer diffusion coefficients well if the solute molecule is smaller than the solvent. It is not capable to describe the small isotope effect. In contrast to the Soret and the mass diffusion coefficient the thermal diffusion coefficient of all mixtures shows only a moderate and almost linear concentration dependence. Its isotope effect, which is its change upon deuteration of cyclohexane, varies with concentration and is proportional to the mass diffusion coefficient, leading to the constant isotope effect of the Soret coefficient. The thermophoretic force acting on any tracer molecule in cyclohexane changes by the same amount when cyclohexane is perdeuterated, irrespective of the magnitude of the thermophoretic force before deuteration. This change of the thermophoretic force is equal but of opposite sign to the difference between the thermophoretic forces acting on cyclohexane and perdeuterated cyclohexane as tracers in any of the other above liquids.
