Abstract
Die Arbeit diskutiert Goethes Gedichtzyklen Römische Elegien und Venezianische Epigramme im Kontext ihrer Entstehung und Publikation. Dabei fragt sie vor allem danach, wie diese beiden Textcorpora die Sta-bilisierung der Autorposition Goethes auf dem literarischen Feld zwischen dem Italienaufenthalt und der fruchtbaren Zusammenarbeit mit Schiller begleiten. Während die bisherige Goethe- und Klassikforschung diese Jahre eher randständig behandelt hat, werden sie hier als wichtige Scharnierstelle zwischen einer Ästhetik der Überbietung und der Klassik in ihrer kanonisierten Form sichtbar, weil in ihrem Verlauf die Grundmuster einer umfassenden Schreibstrategie formuliert und etabliert werden, die bis zur Moderne die Funktionsweisen des literarischen Feldes prägen. Mithin wird die Klassik nicht nur als literaturgeschichtliche Epoche verstanden, sondern als eine Dynamisierung der literarischen Kommunikation, die seither selbstreferenziell und relativ autonom funktioniert.
Abstract in another language
The study discusses Goethe’s Römische Elegien and Venezianische Epigramme reflecting the distinct pro-cesses of writing and publication. One aim is to show how the author Goethe gains a strengthened position within the literary field after his return from Italy and during the first year of his cooperation with Schiller. As the scholarly research so far has focused on a classical period starting with this collaboration and rather neglected the 10 years between 1786 and 1796, this study foregrounds the connection between Goethe’s poetic strategies during his earlier Sturm und Drang, which he left behind, and those to be observed in his classical period with its canonized works. The development of new aesthetic strategies does not only enable him to become a well-established author again, it also shapes the literary communication and the ways the literary field functions. Klassik in this conceptualization is not only to be understood as a certain stylistic period within the history of literature but as a revolution within literary communication.
