Abstract

Abstract in another language

The following thesis aims at a philosophical and historical clarification of modern economics’ foundations. It therefore follows the development of mechanical thinking from Descartes and Leibniz on to analytical mechanics and its heyday during the 19th century energetic revolution in the natural sciences; laying the main focus on the ontological and epistemological decisions made during this development. Subsequently the adoption of mechanical thinking, including calculus methodology, in economic science is studied on the basis of early neoclassical theorization. Using the example of Paul A. Samuelsons’ Economics, the thesis finally traces the mechanical foundations of modern economics textbooks.
