Abstract

Abstract in weiterer Sprache

One emphasis of this work was on the advancement and improvement of the evaporation chamber present in this department to create complex multi layer devices. In order to obtain a better control of the evaporation process, three resistance heaters were replaced by effusion cells, which allow better control than the resistance heaters. Additionally, three new sensors, which allow the tracking of the evaporation rate and the evaporated layer thickness, were connected to these effusion cells. In order to reduce the layer thickness distribution of a layer which is evaporated on the whole substrate area (76 x 76 mm2) the fixed mask sledge was replaced by a rotating setup with a mask unit that rotates above the sources during the evaporation process. The rotating setup offers all combinatorial possibilities for creating sectors and layer thickness gradients of the mask sledge. The internal gradient caused by source assembly was significantly reduced below 7 %. Another aim was the extension of the lifetime of the fabricated organic light emitting diodes (OLEDs) by protecting them from oxygen and air moisture. This was realized by attaching an inert gas chamber to the evaporation chamber, which can be flooded with inert gas and in which the ready made organic light emitting diodes can be encapsulated. For the characterization of the combinatorial libraries, new equipment (FLASHScan® 530) was acquired. With this instrument it is possible to measure both absorption and luminescence of a combinatorial library very quickly. In this work it was demonstrated that with the improved combinatorial setup, it is possible to evaporate organic light-emitting diodes very effectively and develop new complex combinatorial libraries. With them it is possible to vary selective different parameters (e.g. layer composition) and compare these different sectors directly with each other. Other major subjects of this work included the investigation of the characteristics of different green, red and blue emitting materials in organic light emitting devices. In the first experiments with organic light-emitting diodes that were evaporated with the combinatorial setup, the efficiency of green phosphorescence emitters was investigated. At the same time the possibilities of the combinatorial approach were used to build combinatorial libraries to vary and optimize the emitter concentration and layer thickness of a guest/matrix system. Regarding red fluorescent materials, different substances were investigated with the help of combinatorial libraries. The main focus of this research lied on the dependency of the guest/matrix ratio and the performance of the organic light-emitting diode. Finally, one blue emitter was investigated during this work. The combinatorial approach was used to determine an appropriate matrix material that fits the high LUMO value of the new blue emitter fac-iridium(III)tris(1,3-diphenylenebenzimidazole). In the search for an adequate matrix material several substances like 4,4´-bis(carbazole-9-yl)biphenylene, 4,4´-bis(2,2-diphenylenethenyl)-1,1´-biphenylene, N,N´-di(naphthalene-1-yl)-N,N´-diphenylbenzidine, N,N´-dicarbazolyl-3,5-phenylene and Diphenyldi(o-tolyl)silane were systematically checked with varying layer setup and defined guest/matrix ratios. As a conclusion, the combinatorial research in the field of organic light-emitting diodes quickly reveals a lot of information to study the complex correlation inside of an OLED setup, which is used for optimizing the efficiency of organic light-emitting diodes.
